K-TOWN ‘92: REPORTERS
In the summer of 2020, in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests, Leadership for Asian Pacifics (LEAP) hired Maum’s Founding Director, Dr. Park, to develop a series of open source educational guides to accompany the 2017 documentary film, K-Town ‘92: Reporters. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Grace Lee and produced by Eurie Chung of Flash/Cuts ( a 2020 LEAP Leadership Award recipient), the 15-minute short, which premiered in community screening events as well venues such as the L.A. Film Festival, explores media coverage at Los Angeles’s paper of record during the 1992 Los Angeles Uprising. At that time, Héctor Tobar, Tammerlin Drummond, and John Lee reported from the field for the Los Angeles Times. Twenty-five years later, they revisit their stories and impressions of those tumultuous events, and reflect on the media coverage they helped create. The short film is a companion to the interactive documentary website K-TOWN’92.
With generous support from Target and 2020 LEAP Leadership Awards Celebration sponsors, Dr. Park worked with educator Wendy Cheung and others to develop and design three educational guides for three different levels/audiences: high school students, working professionals new to conversations and concepts related to racial in/justice (“introductory”), and working professionals/advocates/college students already versed in conversations and concepts related to racial in/justice and in need of a deeper dive (“advanced”). In addition, the curriculum team created a materials packet to accompany all three guides. Maum hopes the guides will be useful to such audiences and anyone looking for help in facilitating brave conversations around the film’s themes: race, racial injustice, and storytelling.
Maum has delivered several workshops to a range of clients on some of the themes of the film and guides.
